No Love For The Haters
I heard on the news this morning that the state legislature finally passed a hate-crimes bill. It took them about four years, and the reason it finally passed was because sexual orientation as a qualifying category for a hate crime was taken out. Why do people hate so much? How can people be that cruel? Things like that make me ashamed to be human.

Does hurting or killing someone because you "hate" them make them any more dead or injured than if you didn't hate them? "Hate Crimes" are a waste of legislation. It is already wrong to assault or kill people. If someone I loved were hurt or killed by a robber, a rapist or anyone else motived to hurt and kill people because of their own selfish choices, should I feel slighted because they are only going to punished by the "usual" laws? Shouldn't I lobby for a law to give extra punishment to "people I care about more than other people"? People are people. No one should assault or kill them regardless of the motivation for the crime---it's all based on selfishness. Hate crime legislation just implies that "ordinary" (whatever that is) victims aren't as important. Why should some crime victims be designated more special than others?
